Complainant Name:
Mr Wilf Burnham

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

Mr Wilf Burnham of Southampton complained that the newspaper had published a readers letter from him that had been edited in such a way that distorted his proposal. The complainant said that the published letter had: referenced a ship he had not mentioned; omitted his proposal for a full scale safety drill for mega-size cruise ships; and had failed to include his concerns regarding the procedure for abandoning ship. He did not wish for a distortion such as this to appear under his name.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper clarified to the complainant (via the PCC) that the amendments made to his letter were part of the normal editing process and marked the letter in its database with the concerns he had raised. The annotation included the complainants particular concern about the Cruise Industrys need for a full scale abandon ship drill.
