Complainant Name:
The Camp for Climate Action

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Express

Complaint:

The Camp for Climate Action complained that an article had misleadingly stated that protestors at the camp at Heathrow in August 2007 had threatened to infiltrate terminal buildings and leave hoax packages. The complainant was concerned that – following a ruling by the Press Complaints Commission that the Evening Standard’s coverage of these allegations was in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Code – the newspaper had not published anything further on the matter.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following online clarification:

On 17 August 2007, we published a report in the Daily Express entitled “Extremist yobs hijack airport demo in plot to cause mayhem”. Our report included information that some protestors had threatened to infiltrate terminal buildings dressed as holiday makers and leave hoax packages. In the light of the Press Complaints Commission ruling of 10 March 2008, we would like to point out that The Camp for Climate Action had no plans to do such a thing and we apologise to them if our article was misleading. We had no evidence that anything other than non-violent civil disobedience was being planned.
