Complainant Name:
Ms Karen Machin

Clauses Noted: 5

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Ms Karen Machin complained that the newspaper had published an article that contained excessive detail about the method of suicide in breach of Clause 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) of the Code. The article reported how someone had taken his own life by ingesting a poisonous plant. It made clear how much of this plant was likely to be fatal. The complainant was also concerned about another article that contained excessive detail about suicide and the general practice of the linking of stories online on the subject.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper immediately removed the offending articles. It made clear that it circulated information on this part of the Code to its journalists.
