Complainant Name:
Mr Curig Jones

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Complaint:

Mr Curig Jones, on behalf of the Environment Agency Wales, complained that the newspaper had inaccurately reported the nature of the Agency’s actions in response to a breach of Waste Management Legislation.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper offered to publish the following statement:

Our article (‘White asbestos proved fatal for their livelihood’ 19 October 2008) criticised the action taken by the Environment Agency and their officer, Ms Smart, against Mr Graham Blackmore. We have been asked to make clear that it was Mr Blackmore’s refusal of a caution that meant the case had to be taken to court. The Agency did not lose the case; Mr Blackmore pleaded guilty to one charge and was given an absolute discharge. The Agency was not ordered to pay his costs.

Report: 79
