Complainant Name:
Tessa Jowell MP

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Mail on Sunday

The Right Honourable Tessa Jowell MP complained that an article had included the inaccurate allegation that she had promised money from the 2012 Olympic Games for the Erith and Thamesmead area in exchange for the selection of Georgia Gould as candidate for the constituency. She said that the evidence in the article did not support this claim, or the allegation from a fellow MP that she had offered a bribe.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following apology:

Further to our article of April 26, we have been asked to make clear that Tessa Jowell never said the selection of Georgia Gould as candidate for Erith and Thamesmead would lead to money from the 2012 Olympic Games becoming available to the area. Ms Jowell said that the Olympics would benefit the constituency and that Ms Gould was the right person, as MP, to maximise such benefits. She did not offer money as a "bribe" if Ms Gould is selected, and denies any impropriety. We apologise to Ms Jowell.
