Complainant Name:
Mr Richard Everard

Clauses Noted: 1, 5

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Mr Richard Everard of Loughborough complained that a report of the inquest into the death of judge William Everard was inaccurate and intrusive into the family’s grief when it claimed that the deceased had “stumbled” into a stream after a “night’s drinking”. The complainant said that the judge had spent the evening in a pub eating dinner – drinking two pints of beer and half a glass of wine – and that the suggestion that he stumbled was speculative.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper – which stood by the accuracy of the report – nonetheless recognised that the article had caused distress to the family and therefore removed the article from its website.

Report: 79
