Complainant Name:
Mr David Johnson

Clauses Noted: 1, 4, 5

Publication: The Sun

Mr David Johnson complained on behalf of his son Haydn that an article about the tragic death of his friend, fellow student Rachel Ward, in Val dIsere contained inaccuracies. Specifically, the complainant made clear that his son had not received an SOS answerphone message from Miss Ward on the night of her death, had not ignored her pleas for help or been criticised by French police for failing to raise the alarm. The complainant also considered that his son had been harassed by the journalist asking for a statement on the matter and that publication had intruded into his grief.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper made a note of the complainants points on its internal records for future reference in addition to removing the article from its website. It also gave an assurance that the information in the article which had been disputed would not be republished.
