Complainant Name:
Ms Emma Mulquiney

Clauses Noted: 5

Publication: The Mail on Sunday

Ms Emma Mulquiney, a resident of Victoria, Australia, complained that an article about the bushfires in the region – and particularly its headline – was insensitive in a manner which breached Clause 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) of the Code.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper – which apologised to the complainant for any offence caused – published the following apology in its next edition:

Last week’s story, written before the full extent of the fires was known, carried a headline which was inappropriate. We apologise to readers who were offended and are making a donation to the Australian Bushfires Appeal.
