Complainant Name:
The Rt Hon Geoff Hoon MP

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

The Rt Hon Geoff Hoon MP, Secretary of State for Transport, complained that an article of 7 February about the severe winter weather conditions was inaccurate and misleading when it claimed that he had told motorists to “stop whingeing” and that “drivers had only themselves to blame for the struggle to get around”.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following clarification:

An article on 7 February stated that Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon had told British motorists affected by severe weather conditions to “stop whingeing” and that “drivers had only themselves to blame for the struggle to get around” by failing to buy equipment such as snow chains.

We are happy to clarify that Mr Hoon was directing his remarks at a group of journalists when he made reference to “whingeing” and the words should not have been interpreted as a criticism of motorists. His point had been that people in the UK would not buy snow chains because our normal winters would not justify the expense.
