Complainant Name:
Mr and Mrs Marsh

Clauses Noted: 5

Publication: Reading Post

Complaint:

Mr and Mrs Marsh of Caversham complained that the newspaper had gone against their advice and the advice of a coroner and published an article that contained excessive detail about a method of suicide that was both insensitive and may lead to copycat suicides in vulnerable individuals.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper made several undertakings to prevent future confusion about the level of detail that should be used in such reports. The newspaper’s action was as follows: it ensured that individual reporters had access to a copy of the Editors’ Codebook 2009 edition; it agreed to contact the Press Complaints Commission for pre-publication guidance when running similar articles in the future; and it removed the specific reference to the suicide method on the newspaper’s electronic archive and annotated the archive piece with the complainants’ concerns.

Report: 79
