Mr Simon Jenkins, Senior Press Officer of Leeds University, complained that a diary piece had inaccurately suggested that the university was incandescent over the decision by Alan Bennett to donate his archive to Oxford University. The article had also wrongly suggested that a university spokesman had declared the subject off limits.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following apology:

Officials at the University of Leeds say they applaud playwright Alan Bennett's philanthropic donation of papers to the University of Oxford's Bodleian Library and were at no time 'incandescent' with anger about this decision, as some have assumed. Bennett remains a valued Honorary Graduate of Leeds, a favourite son of the city and this relations with academics there are, and always have been, wholly amicable.
