Publication: News of the World

David Kidney, Member of Parliament for Stafford, complained that an article about his expenses claims contained inaccuracies.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following clarification on the matter:

On June 21, we reported that Labour Minister David Kidney had claimed £55 for a hotel room, failed to pay the bill, then submitted a payment demand from bailiffs. Our information was based on the publication of MPs' expenses. However, it has since become clear that the bill - for a room for Mayor of Middlesbrough Ray Mallon - had already been paid. Due to confusion at the hotel over invoices, bailiffs were contacted and submitted their demands directly to the Parliamentary fees office. We are now happy to confirm that Mr Kidney did not submit the invoices and that the cost of the hotel was not paid by the taxpayer.
