Complainant Name:
Mr Charles Markland

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Mr Charles Markland of Oxford complained that the newspaper had implied that he had cheated by continuing to appear in the television programme University Challenge after moving to a different college at Oxford University. It had also inaccurately claimed that Granada television had not been informed of this move, and that it had occurred prior to his first appearance rather than mid-series.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper agreed to publish the following statement:

Charles Markland

Following our article "Come on! How many cheats?" (March 4), which referred to Charles Markland's transfer from Christ Church College to Balliol during University Challenge 2008 together with his claim that upon being so informed Granada, the programme's producer, had said "it was all right", we wish to make clear that there was no basis for any suggestion that Mr Markland was ineligible to compete as a Christ Church team member. As we reported online the next day, Granada withdrew its earlier claim to the contrary by confirming that on being informed of Mr Markland's transfer it had allowed him to continue.

Due to an editing error, for which the author was not responsible, our separate online article "More University Challenge Cheats?" but headed on our printed features page "Quizzing has turned nasty since the chivalrous days of Bamber" (March 4), wrongly stated that Mr Markland had admitted he had moved from Christ Church to another college before the University Challenge 2008 contest began.

We accept entirely that Mr Markland did not cheat and sincerely apologise to him and his family for any distress caused by any contrary impression out March 4 article may have given, for not reporting Granada's confirmation promptly in our printed editions as we did online, and for the error in our feature article.
