Mr Edward Pugh complained to the Press Complaints Commission questioning the accuracy of the newspaper's claim that up to 60,000 people might die as a result of the cold winter.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper explained that the figure related to Excess Winter Mortality and not to direct victims of the weather, and indicated that the figures cited were similar to those attributed to previous cold winters in the uk.
