Dr John P Warren complained to the Press Complaints Commission hat the newspaper had published a misleading article which had not mentioned the inherent risks of circumcision as a surgical procedure, and had given the impression that it was legitimate practice in the UK to conduct the operation without anaesthesia.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following statement:

In our article of July 14, 2009, on potential benefits of neonatal circumcision, we stated that the procedure can be performed ‘with or without anaesthetic'.

We would like to clarify that General Medical Council guidelines in the UK state that doctors must use anaesthesia in the operation.
