Tina Mercer, the wife of a Lieutenant Colonel who was serving in Afghanistan, complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article about her husband which included her home address and the names and ages of her children and named their school. The complainant was concerned that in revealing these private details, the newspaper had compromised her family's security.

The newspaper explained that the baulk of the information revealed in the article had been provided by the Ministry of Defence in a press release. However, the editor accepted that there had been an error of judgement with regard to the amount of personal detail that was included in the final copy. The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated a private letter of apology for the complainant.
