Mr Paul Thorp of Wigan complained to the Press Complaints Commission about a photograph depicting an empty section of seats at a Wigan FC home game, together with a caption stating that the match was played in front of a ‘relatively sparse crowd'. He said that the photograph showed a stand which was closed to fans, and therefore the article misled readers as to crowd attendance at the game.

While the newspaper did not accept that it had acted in breach of the Editors' Code, the complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the removal of the image and caption from the online article.
