Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

Ms Jane Fae complained to the Press Complaints Commission that an article gave the overall misleading impression that the NHS provided hair removal for transgender individuals for cosmetic purposes. She stated that hair removal was only offered by the NHS for medical reasons. The complainant was further concerned that the figure given in the article of "400 gender reassignment cases a year" was inaccurate.

Resolution:

The complainant continued to be of the opinion that the article gave the overall false impression that hair removal was offered to transgender individuals on the NHS for cosmetic reasons, and that readers would be misled to this effect. However, the complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the alteration of the online article to reflect that there were around 150 gender reassignment surgeries on the NHS each year.
