Alan Sharpe complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published a biased, misleading account of his hearing at Carlisle Magistrates' Court for an alleged failure to comply with a planning notice issued by his local council. The complainant was concerned that the newspaper had approached the council for its comment, but failed to contact him prior to publication. In his view, this resulted in an article that omitted background details essential to the story.

The newspaper explained that it was not present in court on the day in question and its coverage was based on a media release from the council. While it had no reason to believe the article was inaccurate, the newspaper accepted that the complainant had provided much additional detail. The complaint was resolved when newspaper offered to liaise directly with the complainant to arrange an interview with a view to publishing a follow-up piece.
