Mr James Harris of Highworth complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the headline and opening paragraph of an article reporting the results of a study on glaciers claimed incorrectly that the study had found that glaciers were advancing rather than retreating. In fact, glaciers were only found to be stable or advancing in one area - the Karakoram range - out of six areas studied. The other five areas all showed a much greater rate of retreat than the possible rate of advance in the Karakoram range.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction:

Himalayan glaciers

We wish to make clear that "Himalayan glaciers are growing, not shrinking, say scientists" (Jan 27) referred to only one of six areas studied, the Karakoram range in the northwestern Himalayas, where it was found that rocks and mud on the surface of glaciers are helping to protect them from melting.
