A man complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article reporting that a Gypsy gang had ‘deliberately drowned' a pony by pushing it into a lake. The complainant was concerned that there was no evidence that the drowning had been deliberate, or that the travellers involved were of Romany descent.

The newspaper did not accept that the article was significantly inaccurate. However, the matter was resolved when the PCC negotiated the removal the ‘Gypsy' references in the article, as well as the addition of the following statement:

It has been brought to our attention that one witness account described the incident as an accident which occurred after the pony trap sank to the bottom of the lake. The word ‘Gypsy' has been removed from the article following conflicting reports regarding the identities of those involved.
