Complainant Name:
Mr Chris Manners

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

Mr Chris Manners complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had failed to make clear that a survey, which placed the UK 43rd in a league table for maths and science education, had been based on the opinions of business leaders on teaching in their own countries rather than the objective comparison of exam results.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following wording in the newspaper:

An article on 9 September reported a World Economic Forum survey which ranked UK schools 43rd in the world for maths. We are happy to clarify that the survey was based on the opinions of business leaders about teaching in their own countries.

It appended the following statement to its online article:

We are happy to make clear that the survey quoted in this article was based on the opinions of business leaders about teaching within their own countries rather than objective comparison of results.
