Complainant Name:
Mr James Shuttleworth

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

Mr James Shuttleworth complained to the Press Complaints Commission that two Richard Littlejohn columns had referred inaccurately to six individuals attempting to enter Britain as "asylum seekers". In fact, a statement from the UK Border Agency made clear that these individuals were "illegal immigrants".

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following correction in the print version of the newspaper, in addition to updating the online articles with the correct position and a note recording the change:

Articles on 5 and 16 August referred to six individuals apprehended in France who were attempting to enter Britain in wheelie bins on a lorry as asylum seekers when they should have been described as illegal immigrants. We are happy to set the record straight.
