Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Complaint:

Catrin Petty, the founder of the Cambridge University Cardboard Boat Race, complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an online article which inaccurately stated that a student was hospitalised with Weil's disease after taking part in the race. She was also concerned that the piece reported that the race had been specifically banned by the University when this was not the case.

Resolution:

The newspaper explained that all students - including potential race competitors - had been warned to stay out of the water and it was the University's own Press Office that had provided the information regarding the sick student. However, as a gesture of goodwill, the newspaper amended the article to remove all reference to the Cardboard Boat Race and make clear that the student fell ill after jumping into the Cam in celebration of exam results. The complaint was resolved on that basis.
