Complainant Name:
Richard Burton

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Eastern Daily Press

Richard Burton complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published inaccurate and misleading information in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code in relation to comments he had made at a planning meeting. The complainant had engaged in direct correspondence with the newspaper previously about his concerns. The newspaper initially refused to print a retraction but offered to publish a letter from the complainant. However, when this was received the newspaper deleted all reference to one of the issues that the complainant raised. As a result a resolution could not be reached.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction:

Incinerator debate corrections

On April 20 we reported on a meeting at Norfolk County Council about the proposed Saddlebow incinerator. Our report said Richard Burton had "led" the anti-incinerator campaign, and that council officers had "pointed out" many of the studies he cited had not been peer reviewed. Mr Burton has contacted us to confirm that the studies were peer reviewed, as he made clear at the meeting; anyone wishing to receive copies can contact him via his website We also acknowledge that Mr Burton does not lead the anti-incinerator campaign; he attended the meeting as an expert witness.
