Mrs Jane Clarke from Cheshire complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article which reported on the death of her cousin. She was concerned that no attempt had been made to contact her family prior to publication, with the result that her elderly mother had learnt the news by reading the article. The complainant was also concerned about the inclusion of comments from a local councillor, which she believed contained implicit criticism of her family.

The newspaper did not accept that it had acted inappropriately, or that the Editors' Code had been breached. Nevertheless, the matter was resolved when the editor wrote personally to the complainant's mother.
