Complainant Name:
Mr Philip Bovey

Clauses Noted: 12

Publication: The Independent

Mr Philip Bovey complained on behalf of Jane Stokes to the Press Complaints Commission over the description of John Prescott as "the Aphasic Mouth of the Humber". Aphasia was an extremely serious and distressing disability, and the use of the phrase showed a lack of respect for those with aphasia.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper apologised to the complainant; the columnist wrote a private letter to the complainant; and the newspaper made a donation to Connect, a charity for people living with aphasia.
