Complainant Name:
Mrs Jagdish Strachan, on behalf of Mrs Harpajan Singh

Clauses Noted: 1, 2, 5

Publication: Hounslow Chronicle

Mrs Jagdish Strachan, on behalf of Mrs Harpajan Singh, complained to the Press Complaints Commission that an article reporting a house fire at Mrs Singh's property in Hounslow had breached various clauses of the Editors' Code of Practice. The reference "One person fled before fire-fighters arrived" misleadingly implied something sinister had taken place: the person who "fled" was a member of the family who had escaped the fire with the family's pet dog.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification:

Following our article of December 2 concerning a fire at a house in Chatsworth Crescent, we are happy to make clear that the family and their dog escaped from the house and were not fleeing. We would like to apologise to the family for any distress that the article may have caused".

The newspaper also agreed to write a private letter of apology to the family.
