Complainant Name:
Mr John Andrews

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Grantham Journal

Complaint:

Mr John Andrews complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice about the manner in which his letter - in which he set out his view on proposals to create a Grantham by-pass - had been edited for publication. He was particularly concerned that the letter had appeared with the headline ‘I think by-pass will be a bad thing for Grantham', which he contended was a misleading summary of his position.

Resolution:

While the newspaper did not accept any breach of the Editors' Code, the matter was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following follow-up letter:

"It's the houses I do not want - not the by-pass"

‘On Friday February 10, the Journal published my letter about the proposed Grantham by-pass, under a headline reading: ‘I think by-pass will be a bad thing for Grantham'.

I should like to make clear that I am not opposed to the by-pass per se - which I actually believe would be of great benefit to Grantham - but I am strongly opposed to the notion that it should be accompanied by the building of 4,000 unwanted and unnecessary houses encroaching on increasingly scarce countryside.'

JOHN ANDREWS
Great Gonerby
