Mr David Thomas complained to the Press Complaints Commission that an article reporting on the controversy surrounding the dredging of the entrance to Falmouth's Channel had breached Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complainant expressed his concern at the newspaper's use of information from a Western Morning News article, which was attributed incorrectly to the complainant. Furthermore, when doing so the newspaper had failed to contact the complainant in order to verify the remarks, or to seek permission to publish his name.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated an assurance on the part of the newspaper that its reporters would not contact or write about the complaint in the future. Furthermore, the newspaper confirmed the introduction of new rules instructing reporters to contact individuals they wished to quote in articles.
