Complainant Name:
Mr John Jack

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Edinburgh Evening News

Mr John Jack, a property conservation employee for Edinburgh City Council, complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) about an article which reported that he was under investigation after it emerged that he was running a ‘building firm', offering to take on statutory repairs notice work. The complainant was primarily concerned that readers would be misled into believing that his firm carried out building or statutory repair work, when, in fact, it only gave advice on property-related matters.

The matter was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction, and the removal of the online article:

Lothian Property Matters

In an article into statutory repairs on July 21 we reported that a council property employee, Mr John Jack, was under investigation after it was alleged that he was running a building firm. We would like to make clear that his company, Lothian Property Matters, was not a building firm and did not carry out any building or statutory repair work but offered general advice on a number of property-related matters.
