East Staffordshire Borough Council complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had misleadingly reported that an outstanding bill, which the council had decided to write off, was for unpaid council tax. The article did not make sufficiently clear that the bill was for unpaid business rates rather than Council Tax.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification in print and on the newspaper's website:

ON September 15, we published a story about East Staffordshire Borough Council headlined ‘Late tax bill is a £45,000 mistake'. We have been asked to make it clear that this related to an unpaid business rates bill, not a Council Tax bill. The Mail is happy to set the record straight.
