Complainant Name:
A woman

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sunday Times

A woman complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) about a photograph of her and 4 friends which the newspaper had used to illustrate a feature on alcohol abuse. The complainant was concerned that readers would be misled into believing that she and her friends had problems with alcohol.

The matter was resolved when, as a gesture of goodwill, the newspaper made donations to charities nominated by the complainant, as well as the publication of the following clarification:

A Briefing column on alcohol abuse ("Dying for a drink", Comment, December 4 2011) was illustrated by a photograph of five unidentified young women taken several years ago in a public place. There was no suggestion that they behaved then or now in the inappropriate ways described in the Briefing'.
