Complainant Name:
Mr Richard Barnbrook

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Evening Standard

Mr Richard Barnbrook complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the article had breached Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The article had reported on allegations, made during the course of High Court proceedings, that the complainant was involved in fraudulent activity in his role as a member of the London Assembly; the complainant emphasised that he had not had any involvement with the companies, or activities, reported in the article and was not subject to legal proceedings.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the addition of the following wording to the online article:

Richard Barnbrook is not himself the subject of legal proceedings over the allegations made by Mr Greville. Following an internal investigation by the Greater London Authority, the GLA's Monitoring Officer and Head of Committee & Member Services has confirmed to Mr Barnbrook that, as it stands, the Authority has no evidence that he has been engaged in fraudulent activity in this matter.
