Publication: Evening Standard

Complaint:

Mr Geoff Martin of the RMT Union complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice about an article which reported that - according to ‘leaked RMT figures' - the number of transport union members taking part in strikes had fallen by 43 per cent. The complainant said that the figures could not have come from the RMT as it did not compile data in the format presented. The complainant also expressed concern about another article which he said inaccurately suggested that the RMT had been abusing taxpayer funds for its own purposes.

Resolution:

While the newspaper did not accept that its articles were in breach of the Editors' Code, the matter was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following letter, as well as appropriate amendments to the online article:

In an article on March 27 you referred to "leaked RMT figures" on the number of union members participating in strikes. These cannot have come directly from the RMT in the form they were reported because we don't compile information in that format.

Geoff Martin, press officer, RMT
