Complainant Name:
Dr Jane Collins and Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

Dr Jane Collins, chief executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust complained to the Press Complaints Commission through Farrer & Co LLP that the newspaper had published an article reporting allegations of a ‘cover up' by the hospital in respect of the Baby P inquiry which was inaccurate and misleading in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction and apology, in the print and online versions of the newspaper, and the newspaper marked its cuttings and circulated a warning to its editorial staff to make the position clear:

An article on 10 June 2011 reported, in common with other newspapers, that Lynne Featherstone MP had accused Dr Jane Collins, chief executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital, of a cover-up by withholding information from the first serious case review into the death of Baby P. While the hospital trust did withhold information, we are informed that it did so on legal advice due to ongoing criminal proceedings and that, once the trial was over, the information was provided. We accept that there was no cover-up and apologise for suggesting otherwise.
