Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph

Mr Peter Reynolds, leader of Cannabis Law Reform (CLEAR), complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) about an article which contained a statement from Northamptonshire Police that warned that the odour of cannabis plants had carcinogenic properties. The complainant said that there was no scientific basis for this claim and that the newspaper had failed in its duty to check the facts.

The matter was resolved when the newspaper published the following correction:

"Northamptonshire Police would like to apologise for the incorrect information provided to the media which claimed that cannabis plants had potential carcinogenic properties. This information was provided in good faith. However, we accept the information was misleading and we will strive to ensure this does not happen again". The original incorrect statement issued by the police was published in the Evening Telegraph on Thursday, February 23, in a report about cannabis plants being seized by police during a raid in Cottingham.
