Complainant Name:
Mr Patrick McCadden

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Sunday Mail

Mr Patrick McCadden complained that the article had breached Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complainant, who was reported in the article as having ‘fled his Spanish villa', emphasised that he had not fled; rather, he was away on business. Furthermore, the complainant said that the newspaper's use of the nickname ‘Pat the rat', in numerous articles that had been written about him, was inaccurate as he had never been widely known by this name.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following statement:

We reported on 4 March that convicted drug trafficker Pat McCadden had fled his Spanish villa after a failed tobacco deal with Russians. Mr McCadden has denied involvement with the deal, and has informed us that he did not flee Spain and was away on business.
