Mrs Shelley McArdle complained to the Press Complaints Commission that an article which reported the recent conviction and incarceration of her nephew, Scott Travis, for fraud breached the terms of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. She was particularly concerned by the claims that her nephew was duped by the family over the identity of his mother and that the complainant's parents secretly brought Mr Travis up as their own as they were embarrassed.

While the newspaper denied any breach of the Code, the PCC negotiated the publication of the following statement appended to the foot of the online article:

Following publication of this article we were contacted by the family of Scott Travis, who have asked us to point out that he was legally adopted by his grandparents and that this was not a secret, nor were they embarrassed.
