Mr James Glanville

Publication: Daily Mail

Mr James Glanville complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had breached Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainant said that the online article - reporting on a cardboard boat race undertaken by students of the University of Cambridge to celebrate the end of exams - incorrectly claimed that a competitor was saving her drink from contamination by river water. In fact, one of the challenges of the competition was to spill as little liquid from the vessel as possible. He was further concerned that the newspaper reported the incorrect numbers of participants per boat and failed to make clear that the debris from the boats had been left in the park in order for it to be collected later in the day.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper altered the caption of a photograph depicting a girl in the river holding her container of liquid aloft to make clear that this represented part of the challenge.
