Complainant Name:
Mr Doug Meikle

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Mail on Sunday

Complaint:

Mr Doug Meikle complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had breached Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code in a comment piece about international relations. He was concerned that the newspaper had inaccurately stated that Russia had fought with Germany against Britain and America during the First World War. He stated that Russia had actually fought alongside Britain and France in the Triple Entente.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the alteration of the online article and the publication of the following wording in the newspaper:

An article ‘Syria: East and West on a collision course' said the First World War brought Germany and Russia up against Britain and America. In fact we intended to mean only that the war brought the great imperial powers into conflict. Russia, of course, was allied to Britain and the USA.
