Complainant Name:
Mr Mark Serwotka

Clauses Noted: 1, 2

Publication: The Sun

Complaint:

Mr Mark Serwotka, General Secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union, complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article that had breached Clauses 1 (Accuracy) and 2 (Opportunity to reply) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complainant had been reported in the article as having condemned ‘workers who avoid tax as the real ‘scroungers''. However, the complainant emphasised that in his speech he had actually condemned ‘rich people' who avoided tax, and not workers as had been reported.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the amendment of the online article, to make it clear that Mr Serwotka's comments had related to ‘rich people' who avoided tax.
