Complainant Name:
Mr Joel Southgate

Clauses Noted: 1, 12

Publication: Daily Mail

Mr Joel Southgate complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article - reporting on a mother who had smothered her baby - that had breached Clauses 1 (Accuracy) and 12 (Discrimination) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complainant said that it was inaccurate for the article to have suggested that there was a causal relationship between cannabis and psychosis, and that the development of psychosis had caused the mother to smother her child. Furthermore, the complainant did not feel that the mother's mental illness was relevant to the story.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the amendment of the headline to the online article.
