Mr Philip Spiers complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice about articles which reported that HSBC had been fined £10m by the Financial Services Authority for mis-selling shares between 2005 and 2010. The complainant, whose business, NHFA, became a subsidiary of HSBC in 2005, was concerned that the articles inaccurately described him as a ‘shark who preyed on the dying' and wrongly suggested that the mis-selling had occurred during the period of his ownership.

The matter was resolved when the PCC negotiated an online amendment, as well as the removal of a number of articles from the newspaper's website.
