Complainant Name:
Mr Jonathan Apps and Ms Tina Hallett

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Independent on Sunday

Complaint:

Mr Jonathan Apps and Ms Tina Hallett complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. The complainants considered that the newspaper had failed to make clear that a council order for the chimes of a church clock to be silenced applied only between 11pm and 7am. There was no requirement for them to be turned off altogether.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the alteration of one article to make clear that the chimes were to be turned off between 11 pm and 7 am, and to publish the following statement as a footnote to another online article:

On 27 April, the successful operation of a timer switch enabled the clock to chime again between 7 o'clock in the morning and 11 o'clock at night.
