Mr Robert Stevenson complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article which inaccurately stated that there were only 100 mature cod in the North Sea.

The newspaper explained that it had amended the article online and the publication of the following clarification in print and on the newspaper's website:

A headline on fish stocks "Only 100 adult cod in the North Sea" (News, Sept 16) over-simplified a complex issue. It referred to a fall in the number of fully mature cod over the age of 13, indicating that this is the breeding age of cod. In fact, they can start breeding between the ages of four and six, in which case there are many more mature cod in the North Sea. CEFAS, the government fisheries laboratory, says the cod stock remains severely depleted but has been gradually improving. We regret the over-simplification. (Cl 1)

The complainant was content to resolve the complaint on this basis.
