Complainant Name:
Mr Warren Bates

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Complaint:

Mr Warren Bates complained to the Press Complaints Commission that an article, which reported the findings of the Sixth Report of Fukushima Prefecture Health Management Survey, had breached the terms of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice. He raised concerns that the article misleadingly compared the findings of the report with a study by the Japan Thyroid Association in 2001. He said that the two reports had different criteria for assessing thyroid growths. Furthermore, he did not agree with the article's description of thyroid growths as "abnormal".

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the amendment to the online article. The reference to the Japan Thyroid Association study and the description of the growths as "abnormal" were redacted from the article.
