Complainant Name:
Mrs Hillary Markham

Clauses Noted: 1, 3, 5, 6

Publication: Daily Mail

Mrs Hillary Markham complained to the Press Complaints Commission on behalf of Mr Nicolus Harling that the newspaper's article, which reported the death of Mr Harling's son, Harry, had breached the terms of Clauses 1 (Accuracy), 3 (Privacy), 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) and 6 (Children) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the removal of the online article, a private letter of apology, a charitable donation and the publication of the following page 2 apology:

Following a feature about excessive behaviour of teenage expats in Dubai, the family of Harry Harling, 15, who tragically died there, have asked us to clarify that there is no suggestion that substance abuse was a contributing factor, or that a tweet he made in the hours before he died was in any way connected to his death. No such suggestions were intended and we apologise if any contrary impressions were given.
