Complainant Name:
Mr Gordon Bell

Clauses Noted: 1, 2

Publication: The Independent

Mr Gordon Bell, Communications Officer for the Free Church of Scotland, complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had inaccurately stated that the Free Church had taken exception to the invitation of Richard Dawkins to a book festival. He stated that no-one in the Free Church of Scotland had opposed the visit and was concerned that readers would have been misled in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy). He also considered that the newspaper had breached Clause 2 (Opportunity to reply).

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper printed a letter from Reverend David A Robertson, made a number of online corrections and added a footnote to indicate that the article had been changed to reflect the fact that the Free Church of Scotland had not opposed Mr Dawkins' invitation.
