Complainant Name:
Karen Walton

Clauses Noted: 3, 5

Publication: Evening Telegraph & Post

Karen Walton complained to the Press Complaints Commission following the newspaper's publication of an inquest report into her brother-in-law's sudden death. The complainant was concerned that the article had been published against the wishes of the deceased's family after their feelings had been made clear to a representative from the newspaper. In the complainant's view, Clauses 3 (Privacy) and 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) of the Editors' Code of Practice had been breached.

The newspaper acknowledged the concerns raised but did not accept that any breach of the Code had occurred. The complaint was resolved when the newspaper provided an explanation for the approach made; agreed to discuss the issues raised in the case as part of its training of reporters in dealing with bereaved families; removed the contact details for the complainant and her family from its records; and made a donation to a bereavement charity as a gesture of goodwill.
